Williamsburg’s Broadway Triangle Project Suspended Due To Discrimination

February 9th, 2012 by Leeds Morelli & Brown

The project to build a massive housing project at Williamsburg’s Broadway Triangle has been suspended after a judge ruled in favor of the opponents blocking the project. The opponents argued it was illegal because it favored Hasidic families over blacks and Latinos. The Court agreed, stating the development “will not only not foster integration of the neighborhood, but it will perpetuate segregation in the Broadway Triangle.” City officials have dismissed the discrimination charges, as they simply have been changing zoning rules to allow low-rise apartment buildings, the same practice they have done in other neighborhoods across the outer boroughs. In the workplace, Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 makes it illegal to discriminate against someone on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, or sex. The law forbids discrimination when it comes to any aspect of employment, including hiring, firing, pay, job assignments, promotions, layoff, training, fringe benefits, and any other term or condition of employment. Please visit the EEOC’s website for further information: eeoc.gov. Although the law requires equality and fairness in the workplace, many private clubs enjoy not having to abide by the EEOC.
