The Senate race in North Carolina between incumbent Elizabeth Dole (wife of former senator and presidential candidate Bob Dole) and challenger Kay Hagan stands out as one of the most contentious and nasty of this election cycle.  Recently the Dole campaign released a television ad suggesting that Kay Hagan is “godless.”  The ad has sparked outrage from many circles and already has lead to legal action being taken in protest.  Ms. Hagan disputes these claims as she is a devout Presbyterian.

While such charges tend to affect the electorate, regardless of a person’s religion, as long as they meet all requirements of an office they can run in America.  This principal of religious freedom in America has extended into other areas including employment law.  Federal laws like Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 specifically prohibit an employer from firing an employee based on their religious beliefs.  Title VII states that an employer may not discriminate based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin.
