Marriage, Divorce : Couple Splits house in Half

Various internet news pages are reporting that a Married Couple in Cambodia recently decided to end their union.  Rather than bother with the expense of an attorney to help sort out their affairs, the couple physically divided their home.  The wife kept her half of the home and the husband dragged his across the village to a new location.  While an interesting solution to a common and difficult issue, most Americans do not have the option of sawing their marital residence in half and moving on.

When a married couple makes the decision to end their relationship, many complex issues must be considered.  One issue that often arises is what to do with the marital residence.  In New York, generally both spouses own the home equally.  Since an American home cannot be physically divided, in many cases it is sold and each of the former spouses gets half of the sale price.  Although this is the general way of things, often couples make deals to allow one spouse to keep the home.  In many cases other assets such as bank accounts and pensions can be bartered to allow one spouse to keep the marital residence.
