March 27th, 2008 by C.J. LeClaire

Leeds Morelli & Brown has received an increasingly large number of calls in connection with hate crimes and labor abuses against immigrants and Latino workers over the last few years. At Leeds Morelli & Brown we often hear horror stories of workers suffering traumatic and fatal injuries at work. Leeds Morelli & Brown firmly believe that these senseless injuries and wrongful deaths must stop. Leeds Morelli & Brown’s investigation reveals that a major reason why such fatal injuries occur is due to workers not having the knowledge and information necessary to ensure that their employers provide a safe working environment. Workers have rights in the workplace that are governed by federal and state statutes. Leeds Morelli & Brown wants to increase the awareness of those rights to all workers, especially Latino and immigrant workers.

According to some studies, the Latino community is expected to increase from 10.27% to 12.16% of our national population. In order to diminish work related abuses and injuries, Leeds Morelli & Brown wants to be more active in educating the community and is committed to working with The Workplace Project. The Workplace Project is an organization that reaches out to thousands of workers annually in order to educate and combat worker abuses. This organization is devoted to curbing such abuses by educating these workers through distributing Spanish handbooks that clearly set forth worker rights.

Leeds Morelli & Brown’s objective is to create a blog for the purposes of educating workers about their rights at the workplace so fewer horrific injuries will take place in the future There are various scenarios under the NY Labor Laws where a construction worker can bring a lawsuit to recover for his or her personal injuries and loss of income. Under these scenarios, the worker’s lawsuit will not be barred as a result of the Worker Compensation Laws.
